Tatar Criticizes Netflix ‘Famagusta’ Series for Distorting History, Calls for Counter-Series to Reveal Truth of 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation

Netflix is set to release a series produced in Southern Cyprus on September 20, which has been criticized for distorting the events of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation and portraying Turkish soldiers negatively.
President Ersin Tatar responded to the series during a live broadcast on CNN TURK.
President Ersin Tatar remarked:
There is significant backlash from both the TRNC and the Republic of Türkiye, which is encouraging. It is disappointing that Netflix is participating in a politically biased narrative.
The Cyprus issue did not begin in 1974. The 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation was a military intervention that prevented genocide against Turkish Cypriots. As Ecevit stated, With our intervention, we are bringing peace to Cyprus. This peace benefits both Turks and Greeks.
It is widely recognized that the 1974 Peace Operation ended the bloodshed in Cyprus and has maintained peace in the region for 50 years.
“THE WORLD KNOWS ABOUT THE MASSACRES”
Before 1974, Turkish Cypriots endured massacres and were buried alive, with the world watching. The global community is aware that UN soldiers did not intervene and that Turkish Cypriots were killed.
“WE MUST PRODUCE OUR OWN SERIES”
If biased propaganda is used for political purposes, it is inappropriate. Turkish Cypriots are responding to this, and we will explore different ways to address it. We must create our own series to tell our story.
They are conducting propaganda in their way, potentially influencing viewers. We need to counter this by presenting the truth through our own series.
WILL THERE BE A RESPONSE TO NETFLIX?
Key positions in Greece and Southern Cyprus are being filled strategically. They can leverage the EU against us. Similar to the propagation of narratives in the Gaza incidents, there is a Greek and Greek Cypriot influence here. We will take necessary actions.
A STRONG SERIES CAN BE PRODUCED
In a separate statement to AA, Tatar praised the success of Turkish TV series and suggested
“Turkish series are popular in the Turkish world, Russia, and South America. In response, a compelling series could be created by Turkish producers and writers to share the ongoing history and struggles in Cyprus.”
