Ireland donated €25,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) on August 22, bringing its total contributions to €475,000 since 2006.

In a statement from the CMP, it was noted that these donations are utilized to identify the remains of missing persons and return them to their families, aiming to alleviate the uncertainty faced by their relatives.

The Committee on Missing Persons was established in 1981 by Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders under the auspices of the United Nations. The CMP Project, which became active in 2006 and is funded by the European Union, undertakes missions such as exhuming missing persons from their burial sites, identifying them, and returning them to their families.

To date, the CMP has identified and returned the remains of 1,051 missing Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot individuals to their families for proper funerals.

The CMP emphasized the need for continued donor support to sustain this bi-communal project.
