Hit-and-Run Suspect Detained After 10 Days, Faces Court Proceedings
MG, who fled after hitting a pedestrian on the Lefkoşa-Gazimağusa main road, was apprehended 10 days later and brought to court.
Ahmet Beyaz, a police officer from the Lefkoşa Traffic Branch, presented the details in court. According to the police, on August 14, 2024, at approximately 00:15, an unidentified driver traveling on the Lefkoşa-Gazimağusa main road near the Demirhan junction hit pedestrian Muhammed Abdullah due to carelessness. Abdullah, walking on the left side of the road, was struck by the vehicle’s left front side and thrown into a eucalyptus tree before landing on the road.
Muhammed Abdullah was taken to Lefkoşa State Hospital by a 112 ambulance and placed under observation after receiving first aid. The driver fled the scene. Abdullah sustained a fracture in his left shoulder blade and was discharged later that day. Through investigation, police identified the vehicle’s license plate as GY 322 and the driver as MG on August 22, 2024. MG was arrested on August 23, 2024, and brought to court on August 24, where he was remanded for an additional two days.
During the investigation, it was discovered that MG had sought vehicle repairs from a mechanic. The investigation revealed that MG is a TRNC citizen and a civil servant in the Traffic Department of the Turkish Municipality of Lefkoşa. The police requested appropriate security measures from the court.
MG’s lawyer stated that MG was experiencing family-related difficulties and psychological issues, requesting an examination at Barış Mental Diseases Hospital. Prosecutor Behrat Mavioğlu questioned the investigating officer and requested a guarantee condition after the medical examination.
When asked about fault, the police confirmed MG was 100% at fault and posed a traffic hazard. The prosecutor requested the revocation of MG’s driver’s license until the case is heard.
Judge Nuray Necdet ordered MG to be detained for three more days, to remain at Barış Mental and Nervous Diseases Hospital if necessary, and to have his driver’s license revoked until the case proceedings.
