Historic Water Find in TRNC
The TRNC’s richest water source, yielding 80 tons per hour, was discovered in Çatalköy by the Geology and Mining Department.
The Geology and Mining Department of the Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment has discovered the richest water resource in the history of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This discovery was made in the foothills of the Beşparmak Mountains in Çatalköy, following approximately one month of continuous efforts.
The newly identified water source boasts a capacity of 80 tons per hour with safe extraction, marking it as the most productive water well ever drilled in the Çatalköy section of the Girne Mountain Range Aquifer. The dedicated team of engineers and technical staff from the Geology and Mining Department, led by Drilling Branch Deputy Chief Geology Engineer Oğuz Vadilili and Hydrogeology Branch Deputy Chief Geology Engineer Salih Erşangil, played a crucial role in this achievement.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Fikri Ataoğlu, visited the site to inspect the water source and commend the personnel for their diligent work. During his visit, he was briefed on the well by the team. Accompanying Ataoğlu on this visit was the Director of the Geology and Mining Department, Ayşen Albayrak.
In his statement, Ataoğlu stated that after seven years, the Geology, and Mining Department successfully located a water source with a capacity of up to 80 tons per hour using their own resources. He emphasized that this is the most abundant water source ever discovered in TRNC history.
Ataoğlu noted that the water source, with a depth of 168 meters, will significantly benefit Çatalköy and the surrounding villages. He also mentioned that similar efforts have commenced in the Lapta region, with the goal of discovering an equally productive water source there.
Furthermore, Ataoğlu assured that the analysis results of the discovered water would be promptly conducted and shared with the public. He expressed his gratitude to the personnel of the Geology and Mining Department for their relentless and dedicated efforts, stating that their commitment and success deserve commendation.
