Child Selling Socks Amid Heatwave in Lefkoşa
A young child selling socks in Lefkoşa’s 40-degree heatwave highlights Cyprus’ economic crisis. Social Services vow action against families.
In the midst of a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees, a heart-wrenching sight unfolded at the traffic lights in Lefkoşa-Ortaköy, where a young child was seen trying to sell socks to passing cars. Such images are rare and deeply unsettling in Cyprus.
Social Services Department Responds
Alev Ecevit, Director of the Social Services Department, addressed the situation, recalling similar instances previously captured on camera. Ecevit emphasized that meetings had been held with both the municipality and the police to tackle this issue.
Ecevit’s Statement
“It is a serious offense for children to be encouraged to sell items like tissues and socks,” Ecevit stated. “Anything can happen to these children… Criminal complaints will be filed against the families, and individuals responsible will be identified and penalized.”
Selling Tissues in Scorching Heat
The sight of a young child selling tissues at traffic lights in the oppressive midday heat, where temperatures soar above 40 degrees, left citizens both heartbroken and astonished. This scene highlights the severe economic crisis in Northern Cyprus and the lengths to which some are forced to go.
Traffic Safety Concerns
With traffic accidents on the rise and traffic safety frequently under scrutiny, the presence of a child in the middle of a busy road is particularly alarming.
Ongoing Efforts and Meetings
Ecevit reminded the public of discussions held with Lefkoşa Mayor Mehmet Harmancı and other officials. “We are actively working on this issue,” she said. “A criminal complaint will be filed with the police against families who encourage their children to work in such conditions.”
Immediate Actions
Ecevit noted that municipal police would intervene to remove children forced to work in this manner. “We will go to the police in person to file complaints against their families,” she added.
Consequences for Non-compliance
Ecevit also emphasized that families would face penalties and rules would be established regarding the violation of children’s rights. “If the families do not comply with these rules, the children will be taken into the care of social services,” she warned.
