Serhat Akpinar Urges Legal Action Against Southern Cyprus’ Psychological Warfare Tactics
Democratic Party (DP) Secretary General and Girne MP, Serhat Akpinar, provided his insights on the “recent developments in the Cyprus solution process” through a written statement.
Akpinar stressed that “After years of diplomatic efforts by Southern Cyprus to undermine the presence of Turkish Cypriots in the higher education sector, they have now shifted to using psychological warfare tactics aimed at the real estate and tourism industries.” He characterized these efforts as “an attempt to impose de facto isolation” on the Turkish Cypriots’ struggle to continue existing within their sovereign borders.
Akpinar noted that Turkish Cypriots have faced attempts to keep them under isolation and embargoes for years. He remarked that currently, “the most ruthless psychological warfare methods” are being employed, stating, “After targeting the sectoral presence of the TRNC, Southern Cyprus has begun focusing on Turkish Cypriot business people, scientists, and selected public individuals, with plans to arrest them within Southern Cyprus, even if they are in the EU or elsewhere globally.”
“TRNC MUST INITIATE A SERIOUS LEGAL STRUGGLE WITH TÜRKIYE UTILIZING ALL DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL RESOURCES”
Akpinar asserted that the process is being propagated through both the press and social media. He emphasized, “The TRNC, alongside the Republic of Türkiye, must embark on a serious legal struggle, leveraging all domestic and international political resources, against Southern Cyprus’ actions targeting successful Turkish Cypriots and international investors in the TRNC.”
He further suggested that compensation claims should be filed with the Human Rights Court for the human and material losses incurred.
Akpinar declared that “it is inevitable to launch a counter-psychological operation against the psychological tactics deployed by Southern Cyprus,” adding that “the lack of progress in the UN solution process indicates that a resolution cannot be achieved outside of Southern Cyprus’ perspectives. The TRNC, together with the Republic of Türkiye, should initiate an international legal campaign against Southern Cyprus within the context of its sovereign rights.”
