Netanyahu’s Congress Speech Sparks Protests.
Netanyahu receives standing ovation in US Congress; protests erupt with demonstrators opposing his Gaza policies, leading to clashes and detentions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received a standing ovation when he took the podium to speak at the US Congress in Washington, D.C.
“Israel does not want to settle in Gaza. There should be a civilian administration in Gaza led by Palestinians that does not seek to destroy Israel,” Netanyahu stated.
“Gaza needs superior security control for the foreseeable future,” he added.
Congressional Protest
During Netanyahu’s speech, US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib protested by holding up a sign that read “War Criminal.”
Hamas’ Response
Hamas responded to Netanyahu’s speech, saying, “Netanyahu’s speech shows us that he does not want a ceasefire.”
Protests and Traffic Disruptions
Thousands of demonstrators gathered to voice their opposition to Netanyahu’s Gaza policies, blocking Pennsylvania Avenue, the main route between the White House and Congress.
The protest included American Muslims, Palestinians, numerous Jewish civil society organizations, and human rights activists who oppose Netanyahu’s policies.
Demonstrators’ Slogans
Carrying banners with messages such as “Immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” “Genocide Bibi,” “Genocide Biden,” and “Free Palestine,” the demonstrators frequently chanted slogans against Netanyahu.
Despite extensive security measures by police, protesters continued their demonstrations on the main routes between the White House and the Congress building throughout the day.
Police and Protester Clashes
Clashes occurred between police and demonstrators during the protests in Washington against Netanyahu’s address to Congress.
Anti-Netanyahu demonstrations, which had been ongoing in various parts of Washington since the morning, continued into the afternoon around the Congress building.
