A recent survey conducted by the Center for Migration, Identity, and Rights Studies (CMIRS) in June 2024, involving 500 participants, has shed light on significant public dissatisfaction with political leadership in the country. The survey identified “inept and incompetent political leaders” as the foremost concern among respondents.

Diminished Trust in Government, Presidency, and Unions

The quarterly survey results revealed that the three most trusted institutions in society are the police, the judiciary, and the ombudsman. Conversely, the institutions that garnered the least trust are the government, the presidency, and the unions.

Optimism at a Low: Only 17.47% Believe in Positive Progress

Only 17.47% of participants expressed the belief that the country is moving in the right direction. Furthermore, a mere 12.9% of respondents were optimistic about the economic situation improving within the next two years.

Widespread Distrust in Leadership

The survey indicated that only 19.5% of respondents trust the President, 17.5% trust the government, and 20.2% trust the Parliament. This means that 4 out of every 5 people do not trust those who govern the country.

Expert Commentary on Survey Results

CMIRS Director Mine Yücel highlighted that the top two issues of concern were “incompetent leaders” and “corruption and management problems.” Yücel emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting, “If 50% of society does not consider the country livable, this is quite thought-provoking.”

Call for Leadership and Social Trust

Yücel stressed the urgent need for a leader who can unite society, stating, “Social trust has seriously eroded due to factors such as corruption and bribery. In order for society and state institutions to trust each other again, a sense of justice needs to be re-established.”
